THE PROBLEM
A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or
becomes obsolete. Although it’s often just one part which killed it, we throw
everything away since it’s almost impossible to repair or upgrade.
PHONE BLOKS
Dutch designer Dave Hakken’s latest project,
Phoneblocks, is still just a concept, a YouTube video and a page on social
media bullhorn Thunderclap, but it represents the kind of innovation we wish
the tech giants were pursuing.
Hakken’s idea is simple. Why buy a totally new phone every
two years and throw your old one in a landfill. when you can upgrade your
handset piece by piece as it breaks down or new updates become available?
Phoneblocks is made up of three layers. A motherboard in the middle is
sandwiched between a display on one side and an assortment of components in the
back. The battery, processor, camera and pretty much everything else can be
easily removed, replaced and reorganized to fit your needs.
