PHONE BLOKS - A PHONE WORTH KEEPING

THE PROBLEM

A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or becomes obsolete. Although it’s often just one part which killed it, we throw everything away since it’s almost impossible to repair or upgrade.

PHONE BLOKS

Dutch designer Dave Hakken’s latest project, Phoneblocks, is still just a concept, a YouTube video and a page on social media bullhorn Thunderclap, but it represents the kind of innovation we wish the tech giants were pursuing.

Hakken’s idea is simple. Why buy a totally new phone every two years and throw your old one in a landfill. when you can upgrade your handset piece by piece as it breaks down or new updates become available? Phoneblocks is made up of three layers. A motherboard in the middle is sandwiched between a display on one side and an assortment of components in the back. The battery, processor, camera and pretty much everything else can be easily removed, replaced and reorganized to fit your needs.

USELESS BOX KIT

I recently came across this little useless box kit and i thought i had to share.

So it's a black box, sort of shiny, with a switch on top. But what does the switch do? Does it launch a nuclear attack? Does it terminate someone you don't know somewhere in the world? Does it make bacon magically appear? You stare at it over and over, hour after hour, until you can't take it anymore. You turn it on. And out of the box, a little finger pops out and turns the unit back off. That's all it does, and the smile on your face is proof it works. Presenting, the
Useless Box Kit.
The Useless Box Kit arrives as most kits do: a pile of parts. With easy to follow instructions, you'll be assembling your Useless Box Kit very quickly. Whip out your soldering iron, do a little bit of work, and then screw the thing together. When you're done, you'll have your own gleaming acrylic box. Set it on your desk and wait for curiosity to cause victim after victim to turn it on - each to be met with the little finger turning the box back off.

The Video is a must see. I don't know who the designer is, but if you know please let me know so i can give them the credit they deserve. Check out my website for more www.darrenbarnard.co.za

AMAZING HAND CRAFTED PIECES

Katherine-Mary a South African Artist and founder of Pichulik has taken Hand Crafted accessories to a whole new level. Katherine-Mary studied Fine Arts majored in Printmaking, Trained as a pastry chef, worked in London as a baker of breads, and backpacked through India, and worked on organic farms in Spain.

The story how the journey started; I went to India and on a 36-hour train ride I started making jewelry out of materials I found on my travels – rope, a bead, and bones. I carried on playing with different materials and started wearing my neckpieces, and each time I wore one someone would comment or offer to buy it. I started to find a language in these materials and people seemed to respond. It all strangely makes sense in retrospect – the evolution from printmaking to pastry to jewels. It’s essentially about making things with my hands says Katherine-Mary.

The Source of inspiration; generally find life inspiring. From the places I have traveled, books I have read and people I meet - patterns, shapes, palettes sit with me. This becomes the departure point for a design, and then it is about trying to resolve this inspiration into a wearable piece. I do have a few styles that are repeated but no two pieces are ever really the same says Katherine-Mary.

Materials used are predominantly ropes sourced from a local rope manufacturer. The rope is called Polypropylene and it is recyclable and has the number "5" carbon Omission.

Free Give away - All you have to do is like Pichulik's FaceBook Page and automatically be entered into the draw to win one of Pichulik's Peacock necklace  . Terms and conditions apply. Facebook Link: Pichulik

AMAZING REALISTIC WOOD SCULPTURES

The cloth looks silky smooth to the touch and the apple looks ripe for eating. But taking a bite of these ones would leave you with a mouth full of splinters. These are the creation of art professor Tom Eckert, who carves, turns, bends and laminates wood to looks like fabrics, glass, stone and fruit. A beautiful and recurring detail in Tom’s sculptures is pieces of cloth, draped over another object.

They give you serious trouble believing that the sculptures are wooden: each imitation of a cloth falls gently and seems to be practically weightless. Tom Says “By tradition, cloth has been widely used to conceal and shroud objects in practices ranging from advertising to church rituals. Covered forms are often more evocative – with a sense of mystery absent from the uncovered object by itself”

These are some of my favorites from his collection.  To see more of his work : Tom Eckert Feel free to email me your favourite Artistwork. visit my website for more: www.darrenbarnard.co.za
